The radio here may be "amazing", but that is sadly where the musical entertainment stops. True, the marimba is the national instrument and can be heard all over the place here, far and wide, but it is only good in small doses. The constant plinging gives any well intentioned person a pounding headache. I am mean POUNDING.
Sadly the music scene is totally lacking. There are hardly any live music venues and certainly no concerts to be heard of. Poor Guatemala mostly gets looked over....but like the radio, a few "gems" slip through. In the last year and half or so that we have been here Korn, Metallica and Megadeath have held shows and shown there faces out here...of course all sold out, almost totally debilitating the city with the traffic jams of excited fans. It is truly incredible/totally horrifying. And sorry to offend any Korn fans, but seriously??!!?!? This is not what I was hoping for. And Megadeath, really? What is in the water out here, do people still even listen to this stuff? What about someone fun like Lady Gaga!?!?!?
But enough complaining aside....I am happy to report that my musical dreams came true last night....Journey made it to the Guate and we totally rocked out, besides ourselves giddy with, concert fun...something we haven't had since we the last time we saw Depeche Mode. It was SO MUCH FUN. The new Steve Perry is fabulous, and let me tell you, Guatemalans are so fun at concerts. Everyone sang their hearts out, stood on their chairs, major fist pumping....GREAT fun.
It was totally more than enough to tide me over until we return to DC.
Don't stop believin'.
